Roy Thompson

It is with great sadness that we learned of the passing of former North Down cricketer, Roy Thompson.

Former Belfast Royal Academy Maths teacher, Roy lived in Bangor until he and the family moved overseas.

During the difficult days at North Down, having lost many players after the 2nd World War and slowly recovering, Roy greatly progressed the situation with his administrative acumen. His brief tenure as Treasurer was followed by a much longer and vital period as Secretary when the club began to thrive.

He was actively involved in promoting North Down at every level and played for both the 1st and 2nd XI’s as a batsman and wicketkeeper.

He was a natural motivator and brought enthusiasm and energy to his various roles, encouraging and supporting the hard work being carried out with the boys’ teams and bringing teams like the Pedagogues every year for midweek cricket.

The club would like to send its condolences to Kathleen and the boys.
