Youth cricket has always been central to our identity. The club has invested heavily in schools programmes, Friday night “introduction to cricket” sessions, holiday camps, and a full calendar of youth fixtures. These efforts have given hundreds of boys and girls the chance to experience the game, stay active, and enjoy all the benefits of team sport.
In recent years, the club branded its junior cricket as an “Academy” and then as a “Player Pathway.” Both played an important role at the time, but we are now planning for a revitalised model in 2026 that will be simpler and clearer. At its heart will be three guiding aims:
- Enjoyment – cricket as a fun sport for life.
- Development – opportunities to learn and improve at every stage.
- Performance – support for those with the ambition and ability to play at senior and representative level.
This approach will ensure that every player, regardless of level, can enjoy their cricket, receive good coaching, and see how they can progress. For some that means competitive senior cricket; for others, it simply means a lifetime of enjoyment in the game.
The club owes a huge debt of gratitude to the volunteers who have supported our youth section over the years. None more so than Neil Dalzell, whose energy and commitment have been pivotal to the growth in numbers across the last decade. Neil has now stepped down from his role, but he leaves behind a fantastic platform for the next phase. That is the essence of club cricket: it is never the end, only a handover to what comes next.
We are fortunate to have a small but dedicated coaching group, combining the knowledge of experienced senior players with the enthusiasm of younger qualified coaches. They are supported by excellent facilities at The Green, including a three-bay practice cage, new grass nets on the square, two grounds for matches, a bowling machine, and developing video analysis equipment. Together this provides a strong base for players to learn and enjoy the game — and we are always keen to welcome more coaches into the fold.
Our long-term vision is simple: to keep young people involved in cricket, to provide opportunities for fun, friendship and development, and to produce homegrown players who will go on to represent North Down at senior level – and perhaps, like others before them, play for Ireland.
And like every club, we are always looking for more people to join us on the journey. Whether as players, coaches or volunteers, there is a place for everyone at North Down. Step forward, get involved, and help shape the next chapter.
