Our very own good news story…

Chairman Dean McDonald

As we approach the end of another year, the Executive Committee would like to extend warm festive wishes to all players, members, supporters, and their families. We hope you enjoy a Happy Christmas and a Prosperous New Year, filled with joy both on and off the field. While the cricket season may still feel far away, the turning of the year reminds us that brighter days are just around the corner.

This time of year also offers the chance to reflect on the efforts of everyone who has contributed to the continued progress of North Down Cricket Club. Whether through playing, volunteering, or supporting our social and fundraising events, every contribution strengthens the lifeblood of the club. We are grateful for your dedication and look forward to building on this foundation in 2025.

And last, but by no means least, we have our very own festive story to share—one which includes searching for a very special addition to the North Down family!

Michael ‘Mickey’ Copeland

Club Signs Mickey Copeland as Overseas Player/Coach for 2025

We’re delighted to confirm that Mickey Copeland will be joining North Down Cricket Club as our overseas player/coach for the 2025 season—a gift we’ve been searching for, much like the Wise Men of old!

This winter, we explored a wide range of options, and while there were some near misses along the way, these things have a way of working out. We’re thrilled to have found Mickey, and we couldn’t be happier to welcome him to the North Down family. At just 22 years old, Mickey combines his talent as a professional cricketer with the enthusiasm and character we value so highly at North Down. As someone who has already represented South Africa U19s and plays for Boland in the CSA first-class system, his pedigree speaks for itself.

Mickey’s first UK season with Cherry Tree CC saw him score 441 runs and take 36 wickets—solid contributions that reflect his ability to adapt and grow in new environments. It was a character-building experience that only adds to his potential as a destructive all-rounder. He’s the kind of player who can quietly win games with both bat and ball, and we’re looking forward to seeing him bring his skills to The Green.

Club Captain Tyron Koen summed it up well: “The experience Mickey brings with representing South Africa at underage levels is a great point for our youth prospects to aspire to. The destructive skills he has at a young age bring a real sense of excitement to see him play at The Green. Having Mickey and Kian Hilton, two youngsters who’ve represented their countries, is brilliant for the club moving forward.”

Mickey’s enthusiasm and professionalism have stood out in every conversation we’ve had. Whether he’s helping at training sessions, contributing during games, or being a positive presence in the clubhouse, he embodies the kind of energy that makes cricket clubs thrive. We’re confident that Mickey will settle in quickly and make a real impact both on and off the field.

Club Chairman Dean McDonald reflected on the signing: “We’ve brought in a young player here who has the potential to grow with us. Mickey is talented, enthusiastic, and brings the kind of energy that will lift the club as a whole. We’re looking forward to seeing what he can do.”

For his part, Mickey is clearly excited about the opportunity: “Everything sounds superb, and I can’t wait to get stuck in with the team. It’s a great opportunity, and I’m really looking forward to joining the club.”

Mickey joins a group of winter signings that we believe gives us a real platform for progress in 2025. Alongside the players we’ve already secured, he brings something different—raw talent, excellent character, and a foundation of professional experience to build upon. We’re optimistic that his presence will contribute positively to the team dynamic and the club’s goals for the upcoming season.

Mickey will arrive in April and stay with us until late August, with the possibility of extending into early September. While he’s still early in his professional journey, this feels like an exciting signing that could offer plenty of value in all the right ways—much like a well-timed Christmas miracle.

We’re looking forward to welcoming Mickey into the North Down family and seeing what he can bring to the team, the club, and the community next summer.

Here’s to a big 2025—welcome aboard, Mickey!
