Someone on the boundary’s edge passed on the message “the 5s won today”. This would seem unremarkable to many, but that was the first time in our history it had been said so it was, in fact, truly remarkable.
Johnny Heron and Jo Montgomery led their troops over to Londonderry Park for the 5thXI’s first ever game, and by coincidence it is believed to be the first time that venue has hosted a NDCC ‘home’ game too. (Gallery HERE)
The cricket was almost secondary to the occasion but for the record a win was banked to cap a historic occasion!
At Ardmore in the Bob Kerr ISC it was a tense affair in which the Comber visitors came out on top by just 14 runs. (Scorecard HERE) Ani Chore held the batting innings together with a patient 79 but after early support from Mo Aahil (24) and Stevie Saul (18) the innings fell away as 78 for 1 became 122 for 5 and although it wasn’t pretty at times, at least the final total 185 gave the bowlers something to work with.
Big Kerwin Mungroo was on the money with three early wickets and when Mo joined the party with two more, the hosts seemed dead and buried at 87 for 5. Enter young South African Ciaran Roundtree who went on the attack smashing twelve boundaries including four maximums and the momentum had swung in favour of the hosts.
Great to see that we have a bit of scrapping in our game though and perseverance from Peter Davison, who broke the sixth wicket stand that was worth 65, and Liam Hayman with three wickets saw us over the line and into the hat for the last 16.
At The Green the runs and wickets were well spread around as the M2s won their second game on the spin with a comfortable 81 run win against Instonians. Scorecard HERE
Peter Shields top-scored with an unbeaten 49 after Gavin Anderson had laid the foundation with 43. Drew Parker scored a brisk 32 and the real impetus came from the skipper Ryan Galway at the end as he made 39 not out from just 23 balls as he and Shields added 74 for the 5th wicket as they posted 227 in the allotted 40 overs.
All the bowlers stuck to the task well and wickets at regular intervals ensured the victory was complete in good time, Josh Corbett the pick of the figures with 4 for 26.
Sunday’s efforts weren’t quite as successful when two young teams lost on their travels, the M3s came unstuck in a local derby against BISC just up the road at Billy Neill, while slightly further afield the M5s couldn’t repeat Saturday’s heroics when they came unstuck at Muckamore, despite an aggressive 60 odd from skipper Montgomery.
